Is Audley End Enchanted Railway Essex’s Most Magical Day Out?

If you’re searching for a family day out that keeps toddlers entertained, older children engaged, and parents feeling like they’ve actually enjoyed themselves too, Audley End Enchanted Railway deserves a spot on your list.

We visited over the weekend with our dragon obsessed toddler. From the moment we climbed aboard the enchanted train, it felt like we’d stepped into a storybook. Between magical woodland adventures, live entertainment, peaceful punting and plenty of space for little ones to explore, it struck that rare balance of being exciting without feeling overwhelming.

Even better, I visited while pregnant, and I was pleasantly surprised by how manageable and enjoyable the whole experience was. It never felt rushed or physically demanding, making it an ideal choice if you’re expecting but still chasing after an energetic toddler.

If you’re wondering whether the Audley End Enchanted Railway Summer Festival is worth it, here’s our honest review.

This experience was gifted and links may earn us a commission, but we only share what we genuinely love.

What is the Audley End Enchanted Railway?

Set within beautiful woodland near Saffron Walden, the Audley End Enchanted Railway transforms the forest into a magical adventure throughout the year, with different themed events for each season.

The Summer Festival is all about fantasy, imagination and outdoor family fun. Children can meet magical characters, enjoy interactive entertainment, tackle woodland activities and, of course, hop aboard the famous enchanted train.

The Enchanted Train Ride

For our toddler, this was undoubtedly the highlight of the day.

The train journey lasts around twenty minutes altogether and winds gently through the woodland. Along the way you’ll pass whimsical scenery, hidden surprises and plenty of enchanting touches that encourage little imaginations to run wild.

About halfway through the journey the train stops for a live woodland show, and this was where our little dragon fan was completely captivated.

Without giving too much away, dragons and fairies feature throughout the performance, making it perfect for children who love mythical creatures. Our son watched with huge eyes the entire time and was absolutely thrilled when he received a little star gift at the end. It was such a thoughtful touch and one he proudly carried around for the rest of the day.

The show strikes a lovely balance between interactive and relaxed. Even younger toddlers can enjoy it without needing to sit perfectly still.

So Much More Than Just a Train Ride

One of the biggest surprises for us was just how much was included beyond the enchanted train ride. While the railway is the main attraction, there is enough happening across the site to easily fill a full family day out.

The whole experience encourages children to explore, play and use their imagination rather than simply moving from one attraction to another. It feels more like stepping into a magical woodland adventure than visiting a traditional attraction.

Our toddler loved exploring the woodland play areas, where charming little playhouses are tucked away between the trees. They felt like something straight out of a fairy tale and were perfect for imaginative play. It was lovely watching him create his own little adventures while keeping a close eye out for dragons hiding in the forest.

The Fairy and Elf Walk was another beautiful addition. Children can wander through the woodland searching for magical surprises along the route. Turning a simple walk into an exciting adventure. It is especially perfect for toddlers and preschoolers who are at that wonderful stage where they truly believe magic could be waiting around the next corner.

Face painting was also a big hit during our visit. There were children walking around transformed into colourful dragons, woodland creatures, fairies and other magical characters. Which really added to the festival atmosphere.

For little ones with plenty of energy, there is no shortage of ways to burn it off. The playgrounds were popular throughout the day, alongside balance bikes and pedal go karts that kept children happily racing around.

Don’t Miss the Woodland Café

After plenty of exploring, we headed to the Woodland Café for lunch.

The paninis were genuinely excellent and easily one of the best lunches we’ve had at a family attraction. Fresh, generously filled and served quickly, they were exactly what we needed before heading off for the afternoon activities.

Family attractions don’t always get the food right, but this was a pleasant surprise and something I’d happily recommend.

A Peaceful Punt Along the River

After the excitement of the festival, drifting quietly along the water was the perfect way to slow the pace of the day. It was peaceful, relaxing and gave us a chance to enjoy the beautiful surroundings from a completely different perspective.

Our toddler loved looking for ducks along the river and was determined to spot even more dragons hiding nearby. Every interesting tree or branch became a possible dragon home, which kept him entertained throughout the journey.

It was such a lovely addition to the day and offered a calm moment amongst all the excitement. Even with a toddler onboard, it felt surprisingly relaxing.

A Dog Friendly Family Day out

If your four legged family member usually joins you on adventures, you’ll be pleased to know that Audley End Enchanted Railway is dog friendly.

Well behaved dogs are welcome around the site, and for many events they are even allowed on the train. It is always worth checking the specific event guidance before booking, as some seasonal experiences may have different arrangements.

Is Audley End Enchanted Railway Worth Visiting?

Absolutely.

Our toddler left talking about dragons, proudly carrying his little paper star and asking when we could come back again, which probably says everything.

As parents, we loved that the day felt relaxed rather than hectic. There was enough to do without constantly rushing from one activity to another. The woodland setting is beautiful, the food exceeded expectations, and the peaceful punt ride added something a little different to the experience.

If you’re looking for one of the best family days out in Essex, Audley End Enchanted Railway offers that wonderful mix of imagination, nature and quality family time that can be surprisingly difficult to find.
